Peru Joins Island-Ocean Connection Challenge to Restore Island Ecosystems
Island Conservation, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Re:Wild are thrilled to announce that Peru has officially joined the Island-Ocean Connection Challenge (IOCC). In a commitment letter digitally signed by the General Director of Biological Diversity, Peru expressed their dedication to ensuring the success of the pilot projects under the IOCC.
The IOCC, a collaborative effort aimed at restoring 40 island ecosystems by 2030, is excited to welcome Peru as a new partner from Latin America. With their participation, the IOCC hopes to engage more countries in the region and around the world to achieve this ambitious goal.
Highlighting the urgency of their activities, the commitment letter emphasizes the combined impact of avian flu and El Niño on guano birds, particularly on Peru’s Guano islands. The General Director of Biological Diversity recognizes the significance of eradicating invasive species on these islands, as it will greatly benefit Peru’s biodiversity, especially the valuable guano birds.
Island Conservation played a crucial role in facilitating this partnership. Jose Cabello, the Head of Operations Latin America, along with Carolina Torres and Max Bello, were instrumental in making this signing happen. Their dedication and efforts have paved the way for Peru’s commitment to the IOCC.
“We are thrilled to have Peru join the Island-Ocean Connection Challenge,” said Jose Cabello.
“Their participation will greatly contribute to the restoration of island ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity. Together, we can make a significant impact on the future of our planet.”
The IOCC looks forward to collaborating with Peru and other countries to restore and protect island ecosystems, ensuring a sustainable future for both wildlife and communities. With each new partner, the IOCC moves closer to achieving its goal of restoring 40 island ecosystems by 2030.
